Keeping schedules – corporate managers use Microsoft Project. Joel uses Excel spreadsheets. What does a Mac Indie use? I use VoodooPad.
It don’t keep track of estimates or hours worked. But I do keep track of the priority of tasks and when they are done. (Hint: Use Control-Command-Delete.) It works well for me as it is quick, light, and allows me to organize my thoughts. For WebnoteHappy Lite, I actually used notecards ala XP (eXtreme Programming) and having my estimate/time worked on each card. That was in addition to using VP.
Using VP allows me to collect my thoughts on a task. If it is complicated, I can make a new page out of it and then put in tests, sample data, relevant documentation, code snippets, and general notes.
Later, I might start including my estimate/elapsed again, but right now it is full-speed ahead, get things done as fast as I can. I’ll re-evaluate after WebnoteHappy 1.0.
Hi,
We’re trying to develop an Open Source web app for solving the management issues in small programming shops. OpenPsa 2 is now entering beta stage, and it would be interesting to see how well it works with coders outside finland.
Would you be interested in trying it out? The app includes calendaring, contact management, meeting notes, projects, tasks and hour reporting.
VoodooPad is my tool of choice for managing my projects, too. It rocks! I tried OmniOutliner for a while, but the structure of entries interrupted my work flow. VoodooPad feels like a text editor, but I can collapse a task away into a link with a few keystrokes. Its wikiness means that related items are automatically crosslinked. I now use it for my administrative work (department head), my professional tasks (e.g., conference or program chair), each of my courses, as well as my development projects.
I’ve just downloaded WebnoteHappy Lite, so I’ll have to see it fits into my flow. I’m hopeful…
Eugene – Let me know what you think about WebnoteHappy Lite at feedback at happyapps.com. :)
Henri – I’m looking for something really lightweight and tuned for a one person shop right now. But I’ll check it out.
